CLARITy Coalition — Champions for Liberty against the Reality of Islamist Tyranny — stands for peace, democracy, liberty, and secular governance. We support the liberty and dignity of all persons, and we oppose antisemitism and the surging incitement and violence against Jews in Israel and the West.
CLARITy has adopted the definition of antisemitism issued by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA):
“Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”
We also support the guideline: “Manifestations might include the targeting of the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity. However, criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic.”
Antisemitism reveals a wider threat, a turn away from democracy and a move toward totalitarianism. This happened in the 20th century with catastrophic consequences, and it is happening now, with essential freedoms such as freedom of speech and equality under siege in Western countries.
Today’s antisemitism, in its current iteration of anti-Zionism and the attack on Western democracy and its freedoms, comes mainly from the illiberal Left, Islamism, and their adjacent groups.
Many Islamists, dedicated to the establishment and hegemony of Islamic states via a caliphate or imamate, reject and oppose non-Muslim states, like Israel, the United States, and other nations in the West. Islamists, also rooted in historical supremacism, reject non-Muslim control of historically Muslim lands that were “Dar-al-Islam,” or the “Land of Islam.”
In far-left ideology, Zionism is not seen as the return of the Jewish people to their ancestral homeland but instead, as white, Western colonialism to be condemned and opposed. Together, these movements, the illiberal Left and the Islamists drive the current form of antisemitism: the demonization, delegitimization, and double standards now applied to the Jewish state.
A recent report by American security analyst Ryan Mauro details how these various groups collaborate on American college campuses. While groups like Students for Justice in Palestine, expressing support for terrorist groups like Hamas, are very visible, the inner core of the anti-Jew campus groups is comprised of far-left groups that include Marxist-Leninists and anarchists.
Unfortunately, discussing the danger of Islamist antisemitism has for years been taboo, and anyone raising it was accused of so-called “Islamophobia.” Some European heads of government have challenged this taboo; in September 2024, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated clearly, “Antisemitism and Islamism have no place here.” The CLARITy Coalition applauds his statement. We refuse to be silenced, either by Islamists or the illiberal Left.
